Father Paul Memorial Scholarship
The Sunday following his ordination, he was sent out on his assignment to the parishes of St. Alice and St
Christopher’s with his 1st Mass then being said at St Christopher’s. He continued to come to our churches to help
out from mid-May until Labor Day Weekend for the following 7 straight years while his main assignment was as
faculty moderator of college student housing at St. John's University. There he was instrumental in leading TEC
retreats which flowed over into his love of working with youth when in our parish. The Altar Servers of St.
Christopher’s and St. Alice loved working with him.
Fr. Paul was convinced that land is a gift of God that should be used to benefit the larger community and be
protected for enjoyment for future generations. He founded the Saint John's Arboretum, designating the Saint
John's Abbey land as a natural arboretum with a mission of education, conservation, and research. He even
planted a few evergreen and maple trees on the grounds of St Christopher’s. Fr. Paul collapsed after a morning
workout and died of heart failure at the age of 48 in 2000.

Grace Herreid Memorial Scholarship
Grace Herreid, or “Gracie” as those that loved her knew her by, was the long time organist at St. Alice in Pequot
Lakes for many years and a Pequot Lakes School teacher. She was loved by many. There were four great loves of
her life: Her Catholic Faith, Music, Family and Education. Her love for God and her love of music filled our worship
with sweetness. She encouraged and mentored other musicians in our midst. Gracie, who lived alone and whose
family lived far away out East, became a revered part of many of our families. She loved to share in family
celebrations. Her quiet smile, keen intelligence and gracious manners seemed to have a calming effect on our
rambunctious youngsters. Gracie was a disciplined, perfectionist typing teacher at Pequot Lakes High School. It was
Gracie’s loving family who established this scholarship. Thank you to all of them for their goodness to us. Thank
you, Gracie, for continuing even now to share your gifts so generously with us and our children and grandchildren!
We won’t forget you. And thank you, Lord, for giving her to us.
